Exhibition Schedule 2011/2012
We have two exhibition halls featuring work by mid-career and senior artists. The exhibitions change every four to six weeks.
There are also four satellite cases in the Gallery Lobby, with work by regional emerging artists and students.
We Love This Stuff So Much
Artist: Laurel Terlesky (Squamish, BC)
Exhibition dates: January 21 – February 26, 2011
Gallery: Main Gallery
Synopsis: Laurel Terlesky’s work in "We Love This Stuff So Much..." explores the iconography of electricity (usb cords, wires, power cords, solar panels, etc.) and its manifestation of contemporary culture. By incorporating street art spray paint into traditional oil painting techniques, Terlesky infuses a pop-culture style into her work. Her approach stimulates dialogue and questions the trendiness of "Going Green".

Hot Light
Artists: Megan Wilson, Brian Longhurst, and Blaine Campbell
Exhibition dates: January 21 – February 26, 2011
Gallery: Discovery Gallery
Synopsis: Hot Light presents multi-media work by Cumberland artists Megan Wilson and Brian Longhurst and Vancouver artist Blaine Campbell. Each artist expresses ideas about the use of energy to generate heat and light in a minimalist form that pushes each object forward as an aesthetic message.

Passive Aggressive
Artist: Linda Findlay (Nanaimo, BC)
Exhibition dates: April 15 – May 20, 2011

Synopsis: Long interested in imagery from the microscopic world, Findlay seeks to explore our relationship with viruses and bacteria through her acrylic on panel paintings. Taking inspiration from the brightly coloured dyes scientists use to view organisms, Findlay’s paintings explode the results onto her large canvasses. Her works are also metaphors for the "unseen" in each of our lives, those aspects that we have trouble acknowledging or recognizing.

Artist: Marijo Swick (London, Ontario)
Exhibition dates: April 15 – July 1, 2011
Gallery: Discovery Gallery
Synopsis: The alternating identities of science and faith form the undercurrent of Swick’s work. Just as DNA molecules produce a unique individual, each work re-uses or re-combines segments and symbols of other paintings, collage, sculptural elements and discovered objects. Questions of faith, destiny, and choice are presented through text, and metaphoric figures or themes.
Marijo Swick acknowledges the support of the Ontario Arts Council.
Fragile Entanglements

Synopsis: Inspired by the extraordinary beauty of the coastal landscape, Marilyn Chapman’s work has been described as an organic interpretation of nature and a close-up look at the complex life systems we rely upon. Fragile Entanglements is a series of acrylic paintings which explore the delicate co-existence of ecosystems and the intricacies of life systems.

Wearable Arts Fashion Show Special Exhibition

Synopsis: This exhibition features category winners at the Wearable Art Fashion Show and competition, a multi-media performance where the human body becomes a moving canvas. Artists of many mediums participate by pushing their materials and imaginations to the limit. Winning works will demonstrate evocative, imaginative, wearable sculpture in the categories of Best of Show, Audience Choice, Best Ethnic presentation, Best use of Recycled materials, and Best Performance. Mesa
Artist: Catherine Tableau (Cortes Island / Vancouver, BC)

Synopsis: Tableau’s paintings evoke memories of past places and travels, and reflect her search for inner peace. She uses colour and texture to explore primitive territories and reveal the earth’s raw and mineral beauty, expressed through deft use of imprints, textures, cracks and relief-details.

Synopsis: Sunshine Coast artist, Megan Dulcie Dill, captures the luminous colours and textures of Pacific Salmon through a unique combination of collaged rice papers, acrylic and oil paint, and carved textures. She strives to find balance between random spontaneity and controlled, thoughtful action in her process. The depth in her paintings is a result of alternating layers of transparent and thick paint. Dill’s work, a passionate plea for the preservation of wild stocks, has been featured in the Pacific Salmon Foundation’s auction.

Synopsis: The CRAG’s new curator, Liz Larsen Stoneberger, has
put out a call to north Vancouver Island artists to participate in a curated show of work on a focal theme. This will be a fall showcase of some of the area’s exceptional artists, with pieces ranging from paintings and prints to sculpture. The works will be offered for sale or rental, as a re-launch of our Art Rental Program.

Synopsis:
This dual exhibition features both figurative paintings and wallpaper style
works by Saltspring artist Stefanie Denz. Her pieces explore themes of feminine
experience, family and landscapes. Denz’s compositions are often figurative and
dreamlike in nature. Emphasis is placed on the human body as a place where
events happen, just as the space around the human body is a location for the
creation of life changing events and memories.

Synopsis:
Guest curator Sara Vipond brings together six Vancouver Island artists for this
group show. The exhibit focuses on the direct and physical process of drawing -
the relationship between the hand, the drawing material and the paper. Each
artist brings their own unique style to the show, illustrating the many
possibilities of mark-making.
Fire Successional

Synopsis:
Inspired by a landscape recently ravaged by fire, the installation Fire
Successional allows spectators to enter as active participants into this
hypothetical environment. Complete with wheels and handles, the charred elements
are pulled around by viewers, leaving their charcoaled tracks on the Gallery
floor. This exhibition draws attention to the fragility and resilience of
Western forests.
Portrait of an Ocean
Artist: Rachelle Chinnery

Synopsis:
Rachelle Chinnery’s award winning ceramic vessels are inspired by the changing
tidal sands and the hypnotic nature of the Pacific Ocean. Through texture and
form, she is able to create stunning representations of oceanic life, meant to
evoke visceral, physical and emotional reactions from the viewer.
Side Saddle
Artists: Jorden Blue & James Doody

Synopsis:
Both graduates from the University of British Columbia in Critical and Creative
Studies, Jorden Blue and David James Doody integrate painting with mixed media
collage to create their eye-popping sculptures and installations. Exploring
themes of materialism, fetishization, and the effects of mass media, each work's
disparate elements blur the lines of art and commercial commodity.
Nickels & Dimes
Artist: Jay Hanscom

Synopsis:
This exhibition by Jay Hanscom pairs mixed media drawings on paper with a series
of large scale mixed media and resin pieces on wooden box frames. Utilizing
various motifs and cultural symbols, Hanscom’s work combines boyhood themes of
masculinity and heroism with conflicting adult frustrations of power and
prospect.
