Richard Calver

Printmaker, Richard Calver, has been drawing and painting since he was a child. In 1979 he began studying with Sybil Andrews, who inspired him to see art as an integral part of his life.

Sybil was a demanding teacher who stressed drawing - "'Draw, draw, draw everything', she would say, 'not just what you like'." Lighting, boldness, tone, and colour were also stressed. No timid lines or washes were allowed.

Detailed training in 1988, sparked Richard's interest in the painstaking process of lino-cut printmaking. "It ignited," Richard says. "I started working more and more making prints on my own. I enjoy the long process of exacting an image." In 1992 he turned to printmaking full time. Currently, he works from his studio/gallery on Quadra Island, where he produces three to four images a year.
